The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Charles C. Perry (ASN: 12008568), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Saint Cloud, Algeria, 8 November 1942. During the Oran Offensive, Private Perry’s platoon was forced by heavy enemy machine gun fire to withdraw to a position from which they could engage the enemy. After reaching the new position, Private Perry, at the risk of his own life, returned across open ground though machine gun and rifle fire, picked up a wounded comrade and assisted him to a place of safety. This act of bravery, beyond the call of duty, was accomplished at great risk and with complete disregard of personal safety. Private First Class Perry’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
