The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class William P. Kennedy (ASN: RA-19338795), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action in Korea. On 19 May 1951, in the vicinity of Pungam-ni, Korea, a fire broke out in an ammunition trailer, endangering the lives of many personnel. Realizing the need for immediate action, Private Kennedy unhesitatingly rushed to the burning vehicle and began shoveling dirt on the blazing fire. When the fire had almost been extinguished, he assisted in moving the trailer to an open area where he unhooked it from the vehicle. His timely actions undoubtedly saved the lives of several comrades and prevented the loss of valuable equipment and ammunition. Private Kennedy’s outstanding heroism reflects great credit upon himself and exemplifies the highest traditions of the military service.
