Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 2 (February 2, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade [then Private First Class] Claude A. Overholt (ASN: 36169986), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily in 1943. When the vehicle in which he was riding suffered a direct hit from an enemy anti-tank gun, Corporal Overholt disregarded exploding ammunition and assured himself that all personnel were accounted for. Later, he administered aid to two seriously wounded men and assisted them to a place of comparative safety. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
