Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 67 (December 1, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class [then Private] John B. Padilla (ASN: 39540217), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily during the period from July through October 1943. During a savage attack upon an enemy stronghold, Private Padilla seized an automatic rifle from a wounded soldier and delivered most effective fire upon the enemy. He fearlessly advanced in the face of close-range enemy mortar and machine gun fire until his ammunition supply was exhausted. His courage and coolness materially aided his platoon in attaining its objective. Private First Class Padilla’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
