The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Myrtie F. Keith (Kieth) (ASN: RA-44040901), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 24 April 1951, near Popsudong, Korea, a ruthless enemy assault had succeeded in breaking through several points along the battalion front and Sergeant Keith’s company was threatened with being outflanked. After placing his squad in firing positions, Sergeant Keith voluntarily moved a heavy machine gun to a point approximately 50 yards to the left of his men in order to secure a better field of fire. When the enemy attempted to storm the emplacements on the left flank, Sergeant Keith courageously remained in his exposed position for over two hours repelling the enemy assaults with his superior marksmanship, which inflicted numerous casualties. When his squad was ordered to withdraw, the bold sergeant covered the withdrawal, even though the enemy was only a short distance away. The outstanding courage and gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Keith reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
