The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Master Sergeant [then Sergeant First Class] Carl W. Siegel (ASN: RA-36310882), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action in Korea. On 23 April 1952, Sergeant Siegel was a member of a detail of men assigned the mission of delivering ammunition to friendly forces engaging the enemy on an outpost known as “Nori” in the vicinity of Majon-Ni, Korea. As the friendly elements, bearing grenades and bandoliers of ammunition, were wading across the deep and flooded Imjin River while advancing to the scene of battle, a member of the supply detail slipped and the weight of his cargo coupled with the rapid current of the river pulled him below the surface of the water. Although unable to swim, Sergeant Siegel unhesitatingly ignored his personal safety and made his way to the drowning man in an effort to rescue him. While attempting to secure a firm grip upon the victim, he lost his footing and was pulled to the bottom of the river by the hysterical drowning man. However, Sergeant Siegel managed to raise and hold the man above the surface of the water until a comrade was able to reach and assist him in pulling the victim ashore where he was administered artificial respiration. Sergeant Siegel’s alertness and courageous actions were directly responsible for saving the life of a fellow soldier and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
