The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Captain (Field Artillery) Richard L. Sweeney, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Sweeney distinguished himself by heroism on 4 January 1970, while serving near Phouc Vinh, Republic of Vietnam. Spotting a burning helicopter, the command and control helicopter landed immediately. Captain Sweeney raced to the burning aircraft and assisted in pulling the severely injured doorgunner from the crash site. After the injured gunner was evacuated, he remained at the wreckage site until a rescue team arrived to secure the area. His actions were instrumental in saving the badly injured doorgunner. His concern for the welfare of his fellow soldiers and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
