The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant First Class Jesse J. Burton (ASN: RA-37862396), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action in Korea. On 18 June 1951, near Magan-dong, Korea, when a blazing gasoline tank was in danger of exploding and causing extensive damage to kitchen installations of the 2d Battalion, Sergeant Burton attempted to extinguish the fire. As he worked to bring the flames under control, the burning tank exploded, inflicting severe burns on Sergeant Burton who received the full force of the blast. It was through his quick thinking that valuable supplies and equipment were saved from destruction. The heroic actions displayed by Sergeant Burton on this occasion reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
