The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private George E. Hahn (ASN: 37636615), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Thale, Germany, on 19 April 1945. Observing an enemy group attempting to ambush a friendly tank, Private Hahn, despite an intense small arms barrage, courageously dismounted from his armored vehicle and crossed perilous terrain to an exposed vantage point. Then, with utter disregard for personal safety, he crawled up within range and wiped out the hostile position with a well-directed hand grenade., thereby contributing measurably to this organization’s seizure of an important objective. Private Hahn’s gallant actions and outstanding initiative were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
