The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class [then Private] Donald J. Montgomery (ASN: 36411614), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily during the period from July through October 1943. During an attack on an important enemy stronghold, Private Montgomery, with fearless devotion to duty, advanced under heavy enemy machine gun, rifle, and mortar fire to his platoon’s objective and directed effective fire upon the enemy. When his ammunition became exhausted, Private Montgomery replenished his supply from the wounded and returned to the attack. His dauntless courage and expert marksmanship materially aided his platoon in attaining its objective. Private First Class Montgomery’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
