    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] Edward R. Murphy (ASN: 0-374378), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, during the period from January to June 1943. When his communications platoon was cut off from his battalion by heavy enemy fire, Lieutenant Murphy, displaying brilliant leadership in the face of overwhelming odds, reestablished communication with his battalion and accomplished. His bravery and boldness inspired the men of his company. Lieutenant Murphy’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
