The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Roque Sierra-Cruz (ASN: 0-1685787), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, in action in Korea. On 4 October 1951, near Chorwon, Korea, while waiting to be relieved by another unit, the men of Company K were gathering extra ammunition as well as other equipment and storing it on a designated site when a flamethrower, accidentally discharged, sprayed the stacked ammunition with napalm causing it to begin to burn. Acting immediately and without regard for his personal safety, Lieutenant Sierra-Cruz dashed the weapon away from the ammunition and proceeded to put out the fire, smothering it by shoveling dirt upon it. Having accomplished this, he then separated the heated ammunition from the remainder, placing it in a hole away from the personnel. The heroic and selfless actions of Lieutenant Sierra-Cruz prevented a possible catastrophe and reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
