The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Anthony J. Monz (ASN: 6975542), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily during the period from July through October 1943. When the advance of his platoon was halted by determined resistance, Sergeant Monz crawled through heavy rifle and machine gun fire to the rear of an enemy position and, by his accurate fire, succeeded in dislodging the enemy. His dauntless courage and aggressive leadership are deserving of the highest praise and were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service, reflecting great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
