The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal [then Private] Joseph P. Mozal (ASN: 6144956), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery B, 33d Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, during July and August 193. When the radio operator of a forward observer’s party had been killed by intense enemy artillery and mortar fire, Corporal Mozal, remained at this position and operated the radio. Later, when a replacement party was sent out, Corporal Mozal voluntarily guided the party through hazardous terrain to a particularly favorable vantage point from which effective fire could be placed on the enemy. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
