Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 15 (April 7, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] Daniel W. O’Connell (ASN: 0-1287983), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa during the period from January to April 1943. When his mortar section was encircled by advancing elements of the enemy, Lieutenant O’Connell refused the enemy’s demand to surrender and, although under constant mortar and machine gun fire, held his position until he was able to withdraw under cover of darkness. Lieutenant O’Connell’s leadership and excellent knowledge of the tactical situation gave confidence to his men and resulted in the safe return of his unit. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
