The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant John J. Mohan (ASN: 13008547), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, on 28 February 1943. When the enemy launched a determined attack on his battalion’s position and advanced directly upon the observation post he was manning, Sergeant Mohan remained in this position and kept his battalion command post informed of the enemy’s progress until communication lines were severed. Then, armed with only a rifle, he fired upon the enemy infantry until fatally wounded. His courage and devotion to duty exemplified the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
