Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 65 (November 26, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Astor A. Morris (ASN: 0-1287744), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily during the period from July through October 1943. Lieutenant Morris fearlessly led a patrol far in advance of our lines, despite extremely heavy enemy fire, in an attempt to rescue several of his men who failed to return from a reconnaissance of enemy territory. Although he was unsuccessful in this attempt, his gallant actions inspired all who witnessed them. Lieutenant Morris’ gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
