The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Corporal Gil Ramos-Rivera (ASN: US-50100761), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, in action in Korea. On 4 October 1951, near Chorwon, Korea, Company K was engaged in gathering and storing ammunition when a flamethrower was accidently ignited, pouring napalm into the ammunition dump. Upon seeing this dangerous situation developing, Corporal Ramos-Rivera immediately began shoveling dirt on the flames and continued until they were extinguished. Then, with disregard for his personal safety, he removed the heated ammunition a sufficient distance so that the remainder of the explosives as well as nearby personnel were no longer in danger. The heroic action of Corporal Ramos-Rivera reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
