Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 44 (September 3, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Donald E. Morris (ASN: 39385416), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 70th Tank Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily on 22 July 1943. After a successful tank battle with the enemy, Sergeant Morris pursued retreating tanks despite heavy artillery and mortar fire and succeeded in destroying two half-tracks and a truckload of ammunition before being fatally wounded when a direct hit of an enemy anti-tank weapon pierced his tank. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
