The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Martin Donovan, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States in Alaska, on 24 September 1943. When a soldier, swimming to retrieve a rowboat was endangered by the icy sea, Private First Class Donovan, unable to swim himself, paddled out on a log to give help. With the use of a second log he pushed in front of him, he enabled the imperiled soldier to remain afloat until he could be towed ashore. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Private First Class Donovan reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
