The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert M. Stump (ASN: 0-58134), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, in action in Korea. On 23 December 1950 near Hungnam, Korea, an infantry squad had moved into an anti-personnel mine field by mistake. Some of the mines detonated, causing casualties. One member of the squad was stranded for over an hour, not daring to move. Upon arriving at the scene, Lieutenant Stump voluntarily entered the mine field, although he had no knowledge of its arrangement, carefully made his way to the man and led him to safety. Lieutenant Stump’s great courage and presence of mind reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
