The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Medical Corps) Philip G. Merriam (ASN: 0-390019), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Medical Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily during the period from July through October 1943. Although under intense fire during an engagement with the enemy, Captain Merriam performed an emergency operation on a seriously wounded soldier and thereby saved this soldier’s life. His high regard for duty and intrepidity in the face of grave danger were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
