The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Frederick A. Wienke, Jr., United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with the 45th Infantry Division, in action during the Invasion of Sicily on 10 July 1943. A landing boat cashed against the rocks near Seraglitti before reaching shore. A soldier who had been aboard became exhausted while struggle against the rough sea. Private Wienke swam to the rescue, held the drowning man’s head above water, and assisted him with a piece of floating driftwood. Then he cut heavy packs off the other soldiers’ backs to enable them to remain afloat until additional help arrive. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Private First Class Wienke reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
