The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade [then Private First Class] Walter A. Lubinski (ASN: 33908536), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Selb, Germany, on 27 April 1945. Observing a large number of well guarded enemy trucks loaded with ammunition, Corporal Lubinski, with utter disregard for personal safety, courageously drove a half-track across perilous terrain to an exposed vantage point. Then, despite an intense artillery, mortar, and small arms barrage, he fearlessly directed accurate fire and destroyed the hostile vehicles. His gallant actions and outstanding initiative were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
