The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant [then Staff Sergeant] Werner A. Mayer (ASN: 12020391), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Mateur, Tunisia, on 5 May 1943. When a strong enemy patrol disorganized his company’s left flank and threatened the command post, Sergeant Mayer, disregarding intense hostile machine gun fire, resolutely led an assault against the patrol. His brave and aggressive action enabled his unit to capture or destroy the enemy and to consolidate positions. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
