The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] Frank R. Hart, Jr. (ASN: 0-1332491), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Torfhaus, Germany, on 15 April 1945. When his platoon became separated from their company during a bitter enemy counterattack, Lieutenant Hart, despite the heavy artillery, mortar, and small arms barrage, courageously led his men across perilous terrain in a determined assault and, with accurate fire, he destroyed several half-tracks, inflicted severe casualties on the hostile forces, and captured numerous prisoners. Lieutenant Hart’s gallant actions and outstanding leadership were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
