The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Joseph S. Manak (ASN: 6690882), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, on 28 January 1943. During an attack on a heavily fortified sector of the enemy line, Private Manak, spotting an enemy machine gun nest, exposed himself to its direct fire in order to warn his squad, which had been advancing unaware of this serious threat to their flank. Although he did not return from this operation, his courage and bravery saved his unit from possible annihilation. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
