The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Corporal] Walter J. Malukiewicz (ASN: 13026444), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily, during the period from March to August 1943. Volunteering as a member of a patrol whose mission was to contact an isolated battalion, Sergeant Malukiewicz rendered valuable assistance to the patrol leader in locating enemy positions. Upon contacting the battalion, Sergeant Malukiewicz proceeded through a heavily mined area and reported the battalion’s position. His performance of hazardous duties under great odds inspired the officers and men of his company. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
