The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class [then Private] Edward E. McClary (ASN: 12022674), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Saint Cloud, Algeria, 10 November 1942. During the Oran Offensive, an enemy machine gun opened fire on a platoon of Company A which was advancing down the main street of Saint Cloud. Private McClary, heedless of personal danger in the face of enemy fire, advanced directly toward the machine gun and silenced it, thus enabling the remainder of his platoon to cross the street in safety. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
