Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 35 (July 31, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Walter E. Martin (ASN: 13048301), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, on 27 April 1943. When communications with his battalion’s observation post were severed during an important engagement with the enemy, Private Martin exposed himself to intense artillery fire and lost his life in an attempt to transmit vital information necessary for the attack. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
