Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 45 (September 6, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade [then Private] Walter S. MacFarland (ASN: 11011034), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery C, 33d Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, during July and August 1943. When a forward observer’s party accompanying a tank company, was subjected to intense enemy artillery, anti-tank, and machine gun fire, Corporal MacFarland, without benefit of cover or protection, established and maintained radio communications which enable the direction of effective artillery fire against the enemy. The courage and devotion to duty of Corporal MacFarland contributed greatly to the success of our advance. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
