The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant [then Private First Class] David M. Miller (ASN: 13186693), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Huscheid, Germany, on 18 March 1945. When a forward platoon became isolated and was in imminent danger of being captured, Sergeant Miller, despite an intense artillery, mortar, and small arms barrage, courageously crossed perilous terrain to a forward position. Then, with accurate rifle-grenade fire, he inflicted severer casualties upon the enemy, destroyed numerous hostile emplacements and forced the remaining foe to surrender, thereby enabling comrades to return to friendly lines. Sergeant Miller’s gallant actions and outstanding devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
