The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Lawrence P. Manley (ASN: 11020875), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, during July and August 1943. When the enemy heavily shelled his company command post, Sergeant Manley was compelled to move his radios to an exposed position on high ground to maintain contact with his battalion. Later, when t he order to attack had been received, he organized the command post group into a rifle squad and attacked an enemy machine gun nest retarding the advance of his company. His outstanding devotion to duty inspired the members of his organization. Sergeant Manley’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
