Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 46 (September 15, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class [then Private] Bennie Lieberman (ASN: 33197625), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily, during the period from April through August 1943. When communications to the rear failed during a period when he was under direct enemy tank and artillery fire, Private Lieberman, a telephone operator, reestablished communications by using radios he had found abandoned nearby. Twice while manning these radios Private Lieberman was subjected to enemy tank fire, but persisted in their operation. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
