Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 1 (January 28, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) John P. Lamb (ASN: 0-1172958), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, Division Artillery, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily in 1943. When heavy enemy fire prevented an infantry company from advancing, Lieutenant Lamb left a place of comparative safety, located an excellent observation post, and proceeded to direct accurate artillery fire on enemy strongholds. He remained in this position exposed despite determined enemy resistance until the infantry had attained its objective. First Lieutenant Lamb’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
