Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 36 (August 5, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Walter F. Laskowski, Jr. (ASN: 6909038), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, on 31 March 1943. When extremely accurate enemy machine gun fire forced his company to seek cover, Private Laskowski deliberately exposed himself to the enemy to divert fire from other members of his company and to enable them to attack the enemy. Private Laskowski lost his life in this unselfish action. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
