The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Robert S. Kumro (ASN: 12017455), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily during the period from July through October 1943. When his platoon was subjected to intense enemy machine gun fire, Private Kumro fired his weapon from an exposed position and inflicted heavy casualties upon the enemy until ordered to withdraw. While withdrawing, he carried a seriously wounded comrade through enemy fire to a place of comparative safety. Private Kumro’s courage and coolness under fire materially assisted his organization in its successful operations. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
