Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 65 (November 26, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Howard J. Kump (ASN: 12007368), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily during the period from July through October 1943. When the company to which he was attached was subjected to heavy enemy machine gun and artillery fire, Sergeant Kump fearlessly established wire communications far beyond the company’s position and acted as artillery observer. Although painfully wounded in this action, he continued his mission, and was of material aid in the subsequent defeat of the enemy. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
