The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant John A. Kissell (ASN: 6979376), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in Tunisia, on 30 April 1943. While commanding a mortar section, Sergeant Kissell, completely disregarding heavy enemy fire, placed his mortars in position and directed effective fire on enemy installations. When his mortar ammunition was expended, Sergeant Kissell reorganized his men into rifle squads and, while directing their defense against enemy counterattacks, was fatally wounded. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
