The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Charley H. Pettitt (ASN: 37398570), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 405th Infantry Regiment, 102d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in in Germany on 14 April 1945. During an assault upon the enemy, Staff Sergeant Pettitt and some comrades became separated from the platoon leader. Realizing the great danger of being pinned down by hostile fire, he took the initiative and maneuvered his men forward until one squad was able to bring effective fire on the enemy. Although he made the supreme sacrifice in this valiant action, he was instrumental in neutralizing the enemy position. The undaunted courage and devotion to duty displayed by Staff Sergeant Pettitt reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
