The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Ladislaus W. Kusek (ASN: 6139982), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Battery, Division Artillery, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy the Mediterranean Theater of Operations in 1943. During a strong enemy armored and infantry attack on our positions, wire communications were being constantly shot out, and direct radio communication, due to the rugged terrain, was not possible. Sergeant Kusek voluntarily manned a radio relay post alone, in an exposed position, through several bombing attacks and artillery concentrations. His courageous action was of material assistance in repelling the enemy. Staff Sergeant Kusek’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
