The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Lionel J. LaPlante (ASN: 6154298), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Division Artillery, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa in November 1943. Sergeant LaPlante continuously and voluntarily left his place of safety and exposed himself to heavy enemy artillery fire to insure the proper functioning of his battery’s guns. His brave action was of material value in the ultimate defeat of the enemy. Sergeant LaPlante’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
