Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 65 (November 26, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) John S. Kersey (ASN: 0-463308), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily during the period from July through October 1943. Although constantly exposed to continuous, close-range machine gun, rifle, and mortar fire, Lieutenant Kersey brilliantly coordinated and led a successful attack up; on the enemy. His fearlessness in the face of grave danger was an inspiring example to the men of his company. Lieutenant Kersey’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
