The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Philip D. Kane (ASN: 11062186), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Battery, 32d Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action in the vicinity of Djebel, Berda, Tunisia, 23 March 1943. When a company of infantry was cut off by enemy tank fire from the rear of its battalion to the extent that delivery of ammunition and evacuation of the wounded was almost impossible, Private Kane carried a radio across open terrain to a forward observation post and enabled the relief of this company by directing effective artillery fire upon the enemy tanks. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
