The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Thomas W. Stenger, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion (AM), 21st Artillery Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Stenger distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 28 January 1971 in the Republic of Vietnam. When a ground unit was engaged in severe fighting with a large enemy force and was in urgent need of medical evacuation, Captain Stenger came on station and displayed courage and professionalism as he initially coordinated all artillery and gunship support for the unit in contact. Although two medical evacuation missions were unsuccessful because of the intense enemy fire, Captain Stenger volunteered to attempt a perilous re-supply to the ground element. Despite the hostile fie, Captain Stenger, with complete disregard for his own safety, descended into the hazardous fire zone and successfully delivered the vital supplies. His gallantry in action and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
