The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Donald T. Kellett (ASN: 0-454454), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 2d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, during the period from January to April 1943. While on a liaison mission, Lieutenant Kellett, noting that the communications to the battalion command post had been destroyed, proceeded across terrain exposed to enemy machine gun and small arms fire to deliver a message of vital importance. Lieutenant Kellett’s initiative and courage enabled an early and well-timed attack resulting in complete defeat of enemy forces occupying that sector. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
