Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 5 (February 9, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant [then Sergeant] Henry F. Karkosky (ASN: 6907467), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily in 1943. When superior enemy forces compelled his company to seek a more favorable position, Sergeant Karkosky voluntarily remained at his post to cover the movement. His personal bravery and tactical knowledge enable his company to accomplish its mission with minimum losses. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
