Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 43 (July 20, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private John T. Irvan (ASN: 35710144), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with Headquarters Company, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in the vicinity of Colleville-sur-Mer, Normandy, France, 6 June 1944. Observing seriously wounded men on the beach awaiting evacuation to ships, Private Irvan unhesitatingly left his position of relative safety to assist a small group of litter bearers. Despite intense surface fire and underwater obstacles, Private Irvan worked unceasingly until his comrades had been carried to shelter. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
