The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Joseph A. Iannone (ASN: 6973918), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, on 4 July 1943. When a hidden enemy machine gun nest retarded the advance of his company, Sergeant Iannone crawled forward in an attempt to put it out of action. Although killed before he reached the enemy nest, his gallant action enabled other members of his company to destroy it. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
