The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Staff Sergeant Steven Philip Wilensky, United States Army Air Forces, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life at Homestead Air Force Base, Florida, on 24 August 1992. Sergeant Wilensky was one of fifteen personnel who remained on base during Hurricane ANDREW as part of the Command and Control Team. When the full force of the storm bore down on the base, the Command and Control Team shelter was severely damaged when an F-16C aircraft was blown into the personnel access door. The wind immediately blew open a staff access hatch in the roof. Sergeant Wilensky quickly realized both doors must be secured for the building to withstand the remainder of the storm. Exposing himself to great danger from 150 mile per hour winds and flying debris, he exited the hatch and was able to tie a rope to the handle to use for leverage in closing the door. Sergeant Wilensky successfully secured both doors, reestablishing the integrity of the building during the remainder of the storm, thus preserving the shelter and protecting the lives of his fellow team members. By his courageous action and humanitarian regard for his fellowman, Sergeant Wilensky has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
